greetings

Sometimes, before the water dries up again,
I go to meet my friend who lives under the surface.

I know she's there, we have our way of saying hi:
I extend three fingers out to her, and she raises hers back,
to touch mine.

Abandoned villages in Hong Kong - my research... - Part 2

Further research, and a quote from my artist-statement-in-progress. Thoughts and critique very welcome (but please be gentle!).

Beyond the fold in the map
Objects can tell the story of a place and the people that lived there, about their lives, about their connections to the wider world. Objects have their own lives* and live on beyond us. They fill our folk/daily life museums: the "modest and cast off remains of other people's everyday lives"**.
These quotidian objects, once transformed into raw clay, somehow signify both the particular (that particular object taken from that particular place) and the typical (that object as commonplace within a particular culture or period). This allows the viewer to bounce between these two points, between seeing the object as an instillation or trace of a particular narrative, and seeing the object as a specimin to be categorised, labelled, displayed.
Placing the clay model back into the space from which the original was taken re-contextualises the object itself and the surrounding space. The viewer is forced deeper (into imagining the stories located in that place) and simultaneously pushed back (into seeing the objects as if through a glass case).

Camera Tossing & Kinetic Photography

Thought some of you might share my interest in kinetic photography. Got interested in this as part of my recent research into transient moments.

And of course there's Picasso.

Here and There

Hey Inari, it's really cool that you have been in my little home town hehe. Where are you from?

So looks like we have something cool going on! Anyone else got some other ideas?

This are some examples of the comparisons between Melbourne and Mexico City...

The house for the Arts:
The Arts Centre

Palacio de Bellas Artes

the main square:
El Zocalo

Federation Square

A sunset from my door:
Coyoacan,Mexico D.F.

South Yarra, Vic.

A music festival
(that starts with V):
Vive Latino

V Festival

My favourite drink:
Capuchimoka, Cafe El Jarocho

Tropical Storm, Boost Juice

Let me know what you all think!

Same eyes, different places

Hi! I also agree, it's a great idea to have an exhibition once we have gathered some good material for it.
Inari, your idea of comparing different locations is very appealing, I have already thought about it myself, even thought about creating a kind of comic strip with the simmilarities and differences between Mexico (where I'm from) and Australia and have written down some things like the differences in public transport for example.

I even have this very random but beautiful example:

Teddy Bears

I am going back home for a month in December, so we could maybe work out a list of people, places or activities that each of us can photograph (or draw, etc.) in our countries and in Australia and then put them all togeather to look at the contrasting points.

For example: the train in Melbourne, the metro in Mexico. Federation square and the Zocalo which is our main public square. Our neighbours, the guys at our favourite coffee shop etc.
Sunsets. Even everyday objects like garbage cans...

Or, working with the time of day like the picture you posted, say, take a picture at 10 pm from your rooftop pointing north, or something like that... Or using the Australian time to say, at 10am oz time take a picture where you are...

Well, this are some ideas, hopefully not too confusing! But I'm in!

Cheers

Cynthia.

I agree re. exhibition within a year

Hi all,

I think it's a great goal to try and work towards an exhibition of some kind. And yes, times are rather busy and intensive at the moment uni-work-wise, sorry for not posting any ideas although promised earlier.

How about making a resolution that after mid-November we'll "convene" virtually through this blog, wherever everyone is in the world, and actively discuss themes and ideas for our exhibition project/s - ?

I'd be happy to work as a small team with someone with similar ideas, or as a part of a larger group, which ever suits people.

Cheers
Inari

PS. I've been thinking about a concept for a series of works, wondering if anyone (in a different geographic location perhaps?) would be interested to work as a partner: We could take photos, or draw, or paint etc., of people in our area, just ordinary local people, say one a day at a certain time, and then pair these portraits to show the similarities / differences. Or something along these lines, just simple, but could be interesting.

???????

Hi all, have had alot of queries re the blog but few posts. A few people have said that they are experiencing difficulties logging on and posting comments. I need to sort this out. Email me or comment as a post. AS the end of the year is looming for assessment in Melbourne I guess some people are busy preparing for that but I am still evisaging a publication or exhibition within the year arising from this site. So ....log on if you like. I will post more details asap when I hear from artists.
